Ethiopia's largest commercial bank is trying to recover large sums of money that disappeared from customers after a "system problem".
The bank's customers discovered early Saturday that they could withdraw more cash than they had in their Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) accounts. Thus withdrawals and transfers to other banks were made for more than 40 million dollars, as reported by local media.
It took several hours for the institution to freeze transactions.
Most of the withdrawals were made by students, bank president Abe Sano told reporters on Monday. News of the problem spread to universities mainly through messaging apps and phone calls.
So endless queues formed at campus ATMs, with a student in western Ethiopia to tell the BBC that they will hold withdrawals until police arrive on campus and stop them.
