Google as we know it will no longer exist. The company is carrying out a reorganization under a new structure called Alphabet. Alphabet will be run by Google co-founders with Larry Page as CEO and Sergey Brin as President.
The new portfolio company will include all of Google's current properties, and the largest of course will be Google itself. THE Sundar Pichai θα είναι ο διευθύνων σύμβουλος, αφου θα πάρει προαγωγή από το σημερινό του ρόλο (Senior Vice President).
Google is reported to have shrunk slightly to pave the way for the new company, focusing on new developments that are different from Google's online engagement.
Page cites projects such as Life as an example Science, τα οποία αναπτύσσουν διάφορα προϊόντα όπως φακούς επαφής ανίχνευσης γλυκόζης, to project Calico, τo οποία μελετά τους παράγοντες που επηρεάζουν τη διάρκεια ζωής των οργανισμών, το X Lab που ασχολείται με τα αυτο-οδηγούμενα αυτοκινήτα της Google, όλα θα γίνουν ξεχωριστές εταιρείες κάτω από την ομπρέλα της Alphabet.
These changes will allow Google Alphabet to better manage products and areas that are not directly related.
Alphabet also allegedly will replace Google as a listed company. All Google shares will automatically be converted to the same number of Alphabet shares, and Google will become a wholly owned subsidiary of the new company.
Both types of Alphabet shares will continue to trade as GOOG and GOOGL in the Nasdaq.
What does this mean in the long run? Theoretically, the collection of the Mountain View team will be able to focus on more ambitious projects while improving existing products, such as Google proper although a more focused portfolio.
As to the need to change the name: Google is very much associated with searching.
The company has long done many more things. Alphabet gives Pag and Brin the freedom to enter new fields without asking customers (and investors):
"Why does a search engine company make cars?"
