Open letter of protest from the cryptographers in Barack Obama on NSA programs

NSAΟ Obama may announce planned reforms to the of NSA surveillance, but not too many seem to be happy with the upcoming measures. Several US citizens, heads of state and corporations have openly expressed their doubts about the upcoming measures.

More than 50 encryption experts, they signed an open letter to Obama asking him to end the mass surveillance programs.

“Their value to society as a whole in preventing terrorism is unclear, but such surveillance is an invasion of privacy, democracy, and the US technology sector. Because transparency and public consent are at the core of our democracy, we invite it of the United States to subject all mass surveillance activities to public scrutiny and to resist the development of mass surveillance programs” the letter says.

In addition, cryptographers believe that the issue is not only that the NSA is allowed to spy but that it does not provide users with a communication infrastructure that is not vulnerable to attacks.

"Every country, including our own, must give intelligence and law enforcement the means to pursue terrorists and criminals, but it must do so without substantially undermining that facilitates commerce, entertainment, personal communication, and other aspects of life in the 21st century.”

The list of signatories includes professors from major universities, as well as members of various associations.
