Barbados announced that they are expanding their diplomacy into the virtual world of the metaverse. It is the first nation to establish a virtual embassy, since the Ministry Foreign and Foreign Trade signed an agreement with Decentraland, a metaverse platform.
The agreement with the Decentraland digital platform based on users Ethereum, was approved in August and will be officially launched in January 2022. This transition from real diplomacy to a virtual embassy will surely surprise some. Nevertheless, Barbados is excited to expand its approach to metaverse diplomacy.
Why did they choose Decentraland?
Decentraland is known as the most popular and one of the largest metaverse platforms. The Ethereum-based Decentraland metaverse platform is a top metaverse ecosystem above any other virtual platform. Decentraland allows users to buy virtual land to build and sell.
However, Barbados does not stop there. The Ministry plans to conclude agreements with other blockchain platforms, such as Superworld, Somnium Space and others. As the first nation to create virtual land, the Barbados plan to build an embassy of virtual architecture that can be carried across the metaverse.

The discussion on the Barbados Virtual Embassy was attended by government agencies, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Of course they evaluated the agreement in detail. They also hired legal advisers to ensure that the agreement complies with the Vienna Convention and international law.
