What is WebTorrent? BitTorrent now transfers petabytes of data to the Internet every month, but with the switch to online streaming begins to lose its prominent position.
A graduate from Stanford University, Feross Aboukhadijeh created a new platform called WebTorrent and managed to spark interest from companies like Netflix and several developers.
When the BitTorrent platform was first launched in 2002 it was revolutionary technology.
Εκείνη την εποχή ήταν σχεδόν αδύνατο να διανεμηθούν μεγάλα αρχεία σε millions people over the Internet, which BitTorrent could do very effectively.
Today, the BitTorrent protocol seems to have lost its shine. While it is still one of the best ways to transfer data, it is somewhat old-fashioned with the rise of video streaming sites and other services.
But what would you say if there was a technology that could combine both? That is, a smooth and direct flow to a browser that moves with the core technology of BitTorrent. This is in short the new WebTorrent platform.
WebTorrent is a project launched by Feross Aboukhadijeh, a graduate of Stanford University. Feross already has several successes in his career. After graduating he founded PeerCDN, a P2P content distribution network, which was sold to Yahoo at the end of 2013.
Ο Feross then focused on WebTorrent, convinced that it could revolutionize the way the internet works today.
“Φανταστείτε ένα site όπως το YouTube with video, where visitors help host the site's content. The more people using a WebTorrent-powered website, the faster and more resilient it becomes,” he told TorrentFreak.
Simply put, WebTorrent is a BitTorrent client for the web. Instead of using standalone applications, it will allow people to share files directly from their browser without having to configure or install an application.
