Its users free applications password manager Bitwarden (also open source) can use a new method control identity two-factor authentication (2FA) in its latest version.
Its developers servicepassword management enabled support for Web Authentication (WebAuthn) for all users of the service.
This means that users of the Bitwarden Free app will now be able to use Windows Hello, Touch ID, or even hardware security keys, such as Yubikeys, to protect their accounts using this authentication standard.
Bitwarden Free users could protect their accounts with two two-factor authentication methods until now: email or with an authentication app. The email is considered insecure, so the method with some authentication app like Authy, the Google Authenticator and more for extra protection.
Bitwarden launched support for WebAuthn in March 2023. Back then, the feature was only enabled for the (paid) Premium and Families plans.
Support for the WebAuthn template has been added in version 2023.9.0 of the password manager application. The release notes on GitHub they reveal the change: “WebAuthn now a free 2FA method”.
