Canonical has been released from scratch the Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS ISO today due to an installation error that could make OEM installations unbootable.
A few days ago, the company informed users on Twitter that the released Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS (Focal Fossa) ISOs recently are affected by a bug that causes new OEM installations through Ubiquity to fail to boot.
Kernel is responsible for the problem. Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS OS comes with updated kernels and graphics stacks supported by the latest Ubuntu 20.10 (Groovy Gorilla) series.
So, this point release of the Focal Fossa version runs with the Linux 5.8 kernel and the Mesa 20.3 graphics stack.
According to error registration on Launchpad, only some machines are affected and it happens when networking was enabled, which means if you did a offline installation, everything will go fine.
“Shortly after the release of Ubuntu 20.04.2 on Thursday, February 4, 2021, a bug was discovered that means that on some systems and under certain conditions, the Ubuntu installer may fail to install a Linux kernel. This makes it system unable to boot,” says Canonical.
This is another example of why Canonical needs to upgrade the Ubiquity installer to Ubuntu Desktop ISO.
For all of the above, Canonical has released new ISO images for the Ubuntu Desktop and for all official flavors (Xubuntu, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Studio and Ubuntu Kylin).
Lubuntu is not affected by these issues, as it uses Calamares as an installer.
Existing users are not affected by this issue.
