Who are the potential competitors of Android and iOS?

Windows Phone, Tizen, Sailfish, FirefoxOS, PrivatOS…

apple-androidAndroid and iOS are both Operating Systems located in the vast majority of 1 billion smartphone currently used worldwide.

Except of the Windows Phone trying to get a good share of the market with the power of Microsoft (and the 7,4 billion investment in the corresponding part of Nokia), there are a number of other ventures, but with different motivations or even arguments.

  • One of the projects is that of the Mozilla Foundation with the FirefoxOS. In this case, the argument is that smart technologies can also be used in the smartphones of the World Wide Web, in fact, so that smartphones can be built and made available by mobile networks.
  • Another, it is Tizen OS, with many recognized names within the Tizen Association, such as Samsung or Intel. Behind this venture is Samsung (notably the presence of Intel), which has recognized that it does not win anything from the availability of most Android in the world.
  • Still an effort is made a little out in Helsinki, by former Nokia engineers with Jolla and Sailfish OS. Here we find people who have believed that it should not have been the fate of MeeGo, and that cellular networks would be particularly interested in the continuation of the project that started within Nokia, but had a vain end after the acquisition of the segment by Microsoft.
  • Another attempt by Canonical will remain on paper, since Canonical's appeal for funding from the crowd of Ubuntu Edge, a new smartphone with the "Linux distribution for human beings". Canonical estimated that the superlative amount of 32 million dollars had to be raised for the construction of Ubuntu Edge.
  • Meanwhile, its Operating System is being developed ς να τα βάλει με Android και iOS. Οι χρήστες του “China Operating SystemOr COS will enjoy a high level of security and the operating system will be fully adapted to their needs, in terms of language, interface and stability of services in the cloud.

  • The Spark is not a cheap tablet from an opportunistic company trying to cash in on the tablet craze. It is indeed a 200 euro tablet built on a… Linux stack on unlocked hardware and the innovative open interface using Plasma , όπου όλα περιστρέφονται γύρω από Activities. Αυτά γράφει στο blog post του ο επικεφαλής του εγχειρήματος Aaron Seigo, γνωστός developer μέλος (μέχρι πρότινος) της ομάδας ανάπτυξης του περιβάλλοντος KDE.

An interesting effort we have not written to you in detail is expected to be presented in Barcelona at Mobile World Congress 2014. It's about it PrivatOS, an operating system that will dress Blackphone, an operating system that promises that our privacy precedes any other activity in this modern communication medium. This promise does not come from the lips of anyone who would like to win the impressions of the NSA scandals. Head of the newly formed Silent Circle is Phil Zimmermann, the man who in 1991 made it available to users the strong PGP encryption (Pretty Good Privacy). The same team includes Javier Aguera and Geeksphone co-founder Rodrigo Silva-Ramos, Jon Callas, co-founder of PGP Inc. and CTO at Silent Circle, Geeksphone and Mike Janke, CEO at Silent Circle and former US Navy SEAL.

  • The first Blackphone will be available for pre-order from February 24 2014. Those who are interested say it to the address https: //www.blackphone.ch
