Scam with car rental company terminals

The Greek Police Department of Electronic Crime Prosecution has been the subject of a regular procedure file, which involved the installation of special software on credit card terminals operating at a car rental store. The result was the deceptive debit of the company's bank business cards.

In particular, as it emerged in June of 2015, an electronic trading company piloted four credit card charging terminals of the car rental company special software, which allowed the parallel connection of the computer terminals of the company.

By digital it was found that the special software in question was charging a different cardholder than the one that should have been charged, despite the fact that the debtor's credit card had been inserted into the charging terminal.

Deceptive charges were found by customers of the car rental company. In addition, a survey of all transactions made it clear that 186 was a total of fraudulent transactions to customers of the car rental company whose value amounted to hundreds of thousands of euros.

The specific electronic and network movement of digital data is under investigation by specialized Officers of the Electronic Crime Prosecution and the Forensic Laboratories to identify any persons involved in the said network and to ascertain any criminal liability in said fraud.

The financial loss of the aforementioned customers will be restored in accordance with a commitment of the electronic trading company after its final identification.

The preliminary material gathered was submitted to the Prosecutor's Office of Athens.
