The Debian developers decided to adopt the no free materialsoftware (non-free firmware), considering the increasing number of devices that, while having open source Linux drivers, also require closed source firmware for better functionality.
Η vote on the matter of the non-free firmware is complete and the votes have been counted. debian votes option 5 as the winner:
"Change SC for non-free firmware in installer."
“Change SC for non-free firmware in installer, one installer.”
So soon we will see Debian Installers including the option to install non-free firmware. This means they will be able to load/use it automatically where necessary, while the user will be informed about it.
With the new method the users they will be able to use them easily cards graphics cards, network adapters and more.
It should be noted that the developers' choice will help with security, as there are CPUs that require an updated closed-source microcode.
I am personally very happy with this decision. I'm using Debian and was waiting for the poll results. The developers' choice will allow for a more pleasant experience for Debian, similar to that found in other Linux distributions.
The new solution is described in Debian Wiki.
