Disney: perfect digital teeth and medieval torture

Disney: Creating the perfect digital teeth requires what looks like a medieval torture device. The graphics in video games and have become very realistic, and the methods used are becoming increasingly complex.

Below we will see what Disney researchers do in their quest to create the perfect digital teeth.Disney

"The ideal of teeth depends on the subject's social and cultural context, as well as his age," Disney researchers report in a paper titled Appearance Capture and Modeling of Human Dental.

"We present a system specifically designed to capture the visual properties of human teeth so that they can be reproduced realistically in computer graphics."

To record what the teeth and oral cavity looked like, Disney researchers needed volunteers who had to remain still as 54 different lights were flashed on their faces while a camera continuously shot .

"To do this, we have a stabilizing neck brace, a headband and a rigid object to bite, which also helps to separate the upper and lower jaws," the paper said.

"To minimize facial blockages, we retract the lips and cheeks using an OptraGate lip retractor."

The visual result of this tool, so stylishly described in the scientific language, seems to have come out of a horror movie.

However as soon as the researchers manage to get them them, they run them through a complex series of mathematical equations to fit their digital templates onto the volunteer's real teeth. Once this process is complete, the digital chompers can be processed and incorporated into movies and video games.
