Doctors at the Dutch University Hospital Utrecht successfully transplanted into a 22 woman patient a plastic skull, which was made with the help of a 3D printer.

Τα στοιχεία της ασθενούς δεν έγιναν γνωστά, για ευνόητους λόγους, πλήν όμως ανακοινώθηκε ότι η γυναίκα έχει ήδη επιστρέψει στην εργασία της και στην κανονική ζωή της.

Medicine team της, με επικεφαλής τον νευρολόγο Ben Verweij, αποφάσισε να αντικαταστήσει το κρανίο της με ένα πλαστικό, που παράχθηκε από μία ειδική Αυστραλιανή εταιρεία. Η επέμβαση διάρκεισε 23 ώρες, και ήταν μια πλήρης επιτυχία, αναφέρει το νοσοκομείο.
"The implants that used to be done by hand, on the spot inside the operating room, using a type of cement, were far from ideal," Verweij said. "Using 3D printing we can make an accurate size. "Not only does this have aesthetic advantages, but also patients' brains often recover better than using the old method."
The hospital says the technique can be used in patients who have other bone problems or to help recover people who have had severe cranial injuries.
Other hospitals have been fitted with skull implants successfully in patients, but this is the first time a full skull has been replaced, the surgeon said.
