El Chapo: who broke the encryption of conversations?

The man responsible for the arrest of drug dealer "El Chapo" or Joaquin Guzman by the authorities was revealed on Tuesday.

Two months after El Chapo's trial in New York, the FBI admitted having access to hundreds of phone calls made by Guzman and his associates through a custom encryption system because they had managed to get in touch with sysadmin of the Mexican drug dealer.

Guzman's computer controller who martyred the encryption system in the federations was Cristian Rodriguez.

There were too many recordings in the trial, from talks where Guzman was discussing agreements on cocaine trafficking, warned his bodyguard not to kill a police officer, and there was also a brief conversation with a corrupt police commander.

These recordings were made because almost a year earlier, a federal agent who had a Russian gangster met Rodriguez at a New York hotel and told him that he needed a system to make calls without being heard by the Authorities.

Rodriguez had just installed such a system in Guzman. The secure communications network was a closed, encrypted VoIP network.

IT went to Guzman's headquarters in the Mexican county of Sinaloa and installed the system. So Guzman connected to his home Wi-Fi network and made encrypted calls.

Having the information from Rodriguez, the FBI managed to break into Guzman's network by moving the servers from Canada to the Netherlands - claiming it was an upgrade. But on the new servers, the FBI had the new encryption keys.

From that point onwards, the authorities managed to record every El Chapo call and their content was of course the drugs

The details were described in court by the FBI Special Agent Steven Marston, who stated that with the help of Rodriguez they managed to obtain more than 1.500 calls from the encrypted system from April 2011 until January of 2012.
