The Directorate of Electronic Crime Prosecution warns of the spread of malicious software through e-mails post office(emails). We have talked about these emails in our publication See if your email was used in Emotet attacks
The Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate has recently reported incidents of receiving emails containing malware files.
In particular, the victim receives a message from an unknown person address email, in which:
- the displayed sender name exists and belongs to its contact list,
- the content of the message is an excerpt from a previous conversation between the sender who appeared and another contact (or the victim himself),
- A file (usually Word) is attached that contains (disguised) malicious executable code.
From the investigations so far, it is found that the attached malicious file belongs to the category "Trojan Horse" (Trojanhorse). This type of malware is used, including:
- to open "backdoors" on a system in order for the attacker to gain control of the infected device,
- to intercept personal user data and
- to download and run other malware.
In this context, internet users and network administrators are urged to be especially careful and to take digital protection and security measures to prevent malware from being infiltrated.
Specifically, internet users and / or network administrators are invited:
- Observe the sender's address of an email and especially the differences in the sender's display name and email.
To create backup copies of files (backup) at regular intervals, to an external storage medium and to keep them offline, so that it is possible to restore them. - In cases where they receive emails from unknown senders or unknown origin, do not open the links and do not download attachments, contained in these messages, for which they do not know with certainty the sender and the content of the attached file .
- Use genuine software programs, updated to the latest version, and there should always be an updated malware protection program.
- Verify and keep up-to-date the version of their operating system.
- Disable running macros and JavaScript at applications which open .docx and .pdf type files.
- Take care of the protection of their portable devices (tablets & smart phones).
