Facebook is planning a major redesign of its platform so that it can compete with TikTok. The changes include more suggestions in the Facebook feed, as well as restoring Messenger to the app.
Mark Zuckerberg and other Meta executives have made it clear for some time that competing with TikTok is their top priority. They recently released details on how they plan to completely overhaul the Facebook app in order to achieve their goal.
According to Tom Alison, vice president of Facebook, the new design of the mainstream of the platform, will emphasize the proposed content from pages, creators and people you do not follow !.
It also says the goal is to turn Facebook into a "Discovery Engine" that will rely heavily on recommendations, similar to TikTok's "For You" feed. Suggestions would come mostly from "unlinked" content, and the users they will see fewer posts from friends and family in their feeds.
The plan will also restore Messenger inbox to the Facebook app in an effort to encourage users to share more content from this Discovery Engine.
It's unclear how long it will take Meta to implement these changes, some of which are faintly visible in Instagram. But it is not the first time that Meta executives have hinted at big changes coming to the Facebook application. Zuckerberg had stated in April that the company βρισκόταν στη μέση μιας «μεγάλης αλλαγής» που θα βασίζεται στην τεχνητή νοημοσύνη.
However, Alison's statements today make it clear how important the new priorities are for the company, which is desperately trying to reach TikTok and regain a young audience.
And the aging average age of Facebook users is a real fact and not at all unnoticed. Personally recently asking today's 16 year olds why they don't prefer Facebook over others Social Networks (Instagram, TikTok etc), they answered me that Facebook is for "adults" who are looking to find their old acquaintances and classmates, and it is not for them.
