Facebook launched a standalone application of Messenger for Windows and Mac. This means you can now use Messenger on your desktop computer without having to open a browser.
At the F8 conference in 2019, Facebook had announced that it had developed a Messenger app for desktop computers. A year later, and with demand for messaging apps increasing due to the coronavirus, the social network has now launched a Messenger Desktop app for Windows and MacOS.

The new Messenger Desktop app for Windows and MacOS includes everything included in the version that runs in browsers. That is, it includes group video calls (for up to eight people), news notifications messages, την υποστήριξη για το Dark Mode, τα GIF και τη συγχρονισμένη conversation on mobile and desktop.

It looks like Facebook has rushed the standalone version of Messenger Desktops due to increased demand in teleconferencing and communication applications. That is why the application came with the basic features that the corresponding web has through the browsers and without many additional goodies. After all, Messenger is not the only option available for those who want to keep in touch with their loved ones.
