Fortnite has more than 100 million players, but many of them use cheaters. So far so good, but lately there have been a lot of infections from malicious software.
The victims? Those who tried to cheat and beat other players.
From last weekteam, game streaming shop Rainway found a growing number Alarms in the security log files. The only common factor for all alarms was that everything came from people who played Fortnite and followed a particular pattern.
The company watched the alarms until the number arrived at 381.000 users. So he decided to carry out some tests. The company assumed that some were using some code to trick the game, and that this code was the cause of the problems.
The Rainway team has searched for all the internet cheaters on Fortnite and made some tests. The results were not good: each one contained a malware.
The company discovered that the malware, in addition to infecting the cheater user, was also collecting V-bucks, the currency that uses Fortnite for in-game purchases. The cheatware also created a backdoor that allowed man-in-the-middle attacks.
The malicious application had over 78.000 downloads and was hosted on many websites. As developers of Fornite seem to have, they need to make their platform more secure as cheaters will not cease to exist and be used by some who do not know what fair-play means.
