By the end of February, the announcement of the open tenders for the installation and mode τουλάχιστον 3.000 νέων σημείων δωρεάν ασύρματης connectionon the Internet (Wi-Fi hotspots) in the municipalities of the whole of Greece.
The target is to allow residents and visitors across the country to connect free of charge to the Internet from city and village headquarters (squares, pavements, libraries, sights, etc.) by next October.
New points in municipalities across the country will be added to existing 606, many of which are already out of service. They will have a maximum data capture limit to prevent the downloading of songs or movies.
Already most municipalities have responded positively to the letter sent by Communications Secretary General Menelaos Daskalakis, indicating the points they want to install Wi-Fi.
The program it will be financed by the "Digital Convergence" under the central responsibility of the General Secretariat of Communications without any burden on the participating municipalities, while the amount of its budget will depend on the final number of points.
Currently, the Ministry of Infrastructure finishes collecting the data so that the final table with the points from which citizens can have free access to the Internet can be obtained.
In about 1,5 month, the contests will be announced, while the contractors who will come from them will undertake the installation and operation of the points for two years. Thereafter the operation will be undertaken by the General Secretary. Communications or municipalities.
Although the number of wireless points access per municipality will result from the population, tourism and other local needs, it is estimated that the points will not exceed twenty per OTA.
At the same time, in the near future, with legislative regulation of the Ministry of the Interior, the procedure maintenance and re-operation of more than 600 existing points that exist in municipal assembly areas and were financed by previous programs. Most of them had stopped working, as the current framework did not provide for the use of funds for their maintenance.
It is recalled that under the governmental design for the deployment of Wi-Fi it is expected that approximately 250 points will be created in archaeological sites, 250 in hospitals, 1.000 in ports and airports in all universities.
In addition, Wi-Fi is already operating on 17 two bus lines and a trolleybus, and is also installed at the Metro, University, Syntagma, Acropolis, Doukissis Plakentias, Omonia, Piraeus and Neratziotissa.
Hellenic Sat will also offer 250 connections to ensure remote connection and have already begun negotiations with OTE for the installation of antennas in telephone booths. Similar facilities are also being considered in some ATM banks.
