Gamers hear sounds and after they stop playing

Most of those who have dealt with (Gamers) πιο εκτεταμένα με το «άθλημα» του gaming έχουν βιώσει το φαινόμενο να τους «κολλάει» η μουσική του παιχνιδιού και μετά το πέρας της ενασχόλησής τους με αυτό (κάτι που παρατηρείται άλλωστε και στον κιν/φο και την ).

According to a study by Nottingham Trent University's International Gaming Research Unit, sometimes the sounds of a game (explosions, shots, screaming, etc.) that have "absorbed" the player remain "with him" even after the end of the game the player with him.

This is the university's latest study on what is called "game transfer phenomena" (GTP): a range of small perceptual malfunctions that follow long-hour gaming "marathons". As reported in a Guardian article, previous research had focused on visual distortions and effects, such as Tetris players seeing shapes move downwards when they closed a them, for example. This paper is the first time such experiences related to hearing have been analysed.

For research purposes, the university team visited forums for games and collected data from 1.244 gamers about such experiences. 12% of them reported re-playing game audio outside of the game environment, from sword sounds to electronic beeps or even "classic" sounds like those of Super Mario coins.

"There are many examples of players who listen to the music of the game as you continue to" have music on your head even when you have stopped listening, "said Angelica Ortiz de Gortari, a psychologist and head of the study. "Some players heard voices, others heard the sounds of the game. It often happens when you try to sleep - someone was watching their computer or console because they thought they had let the game play. "

The most interesting examples, however, have to do with real-world incidents that seem to point to situations in the game: a player said he heard sounds from the Portal puzzle game when he was passing through buildings that reminded him of the world of the game, while a more extreme case had to do with a player who, when you fell in the dark, heard a sound from the horror game Silent Hill, who informed that monsters were coming.

As noted in the article, there is particularly strong skepticism surrounding GTPs, as research is currently based on a small percentage of players talking to other players on forums, where the possibility of exaggeration is always present. However, similar experiences have been studied since the 1990s. According to de Gortari, GTPs have to do with how the brain "makes sense" of coming from the senses. "These sounds have meaning, a purpose in video games - and that meaning affects how players react in real life."

In any case, one of the goals of the study is to demystify GTPs, which in some cases can even terrify people who experience them, as they can last for hours or days. “We want to recognize, register and explain these experiences. But this research also tells us how the mind works, and how it creates , how we learn to form connections - this can be useful in learning new languages, for example.'
