GNOME: The popular desktop environment designed for distributions GNU / Linux, completed 20 years of development and existence yesterday.
20 years ago (August 15, 1997), the GNOME Project was founded by Miguel de Icaza and Federico Mena Quintero. And the developers wanted to create an alternative desktop with environment for KDE and more projects.
However, it took two years to release the first stable one version, GNOME 1.0, in 1999. Since then, the GNOME Project has been very active and has released at least 33 stable releases, the latest being GNOME 3.24 “Portland”.
GNOME 3.24 has already been adopted by many popular GNU / Linux distributions such as OpenSuSE, Fedora and Ubuntu, and despite its recent release on 22 March, development work never stops.
That's why we're waiting for the next big release of GNOME 3.26 "Manchester", which has just entered Beta and is expected to release next month, September 13, 2017.
Until then, the GNOME Project community and development team invites all Gnomes friends and each Open Source community to celebrate 20's GNOMEme anniversary.
"Celebrate 20 Years with the GNOME Foundation: Visit the 20th Birthday Page to Find a Party - or Even Start Your Own", developers report.
"You can also support GNOME by making a donation or becoming a friend of GNOME".
On this occasion, we wish for a happy anniversary at the GNOME Project and expect to see what's new with GNOME 3.26, which will be used as a preset desktop for the upcoming Ubuntu 17.10 and Fedora 27.
