Google has introduced some upcoming features for Google Chat on gmail a few months ago, but did not say when exactly they will be available to the general public.
With less than a month to go until the end of the year, Google has revealed that the ability to call someone directly using Google Chat in Gmail is now available on mobile devices.
Google Chat in Gmail now allows users to call someone directly from the web.
Gmail users on Android and iOS can start or join meetings and calls audio from talks 1:1 on Google Chat within the mobile app. The new feature only works for 1:1 chats for now at least.
Just select the phone icon or video in the upper right corner of one conversations 1:1 to call someone directly. Note, however, that "Join a call" from the Google Chat app redirects to the Gmail app, as that's where the call will take place.
To join a call, select the phone or video in the 1: 1 conversation. You will see a banner of the person you are chatting with during a call. Also, the duration of the call and a Meet icon will be visible on the chat roster. Finally, the red phone or video icon and the chat roster are used for missed calls.
