The Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate is reporting on a new method being used to deceive and blackmail unsuspecting citizens via the Internet.
On the pretext that a family member is facing a serious health problem, they urge citizens to make video calls over the Internet asking them to remove their clothes to be "examined" by alleged doctors
Subsequently, the perpetrators, after having recorded the audiovisual material of the communication, extortion their victims, asking for the money not to publish the material in question
Citizens are requested to be especially careful to avoid being deceived and to protect their personal information data
The Electronic Crime Prosecution Directorate of the Greek Police, as part of its preventive action, informs citizens about the prevention and avoidance of their deception from the constantly changing forms of fraud through the Internet.
Specifically, the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate informs about a new case of deception and consequent extortion of citizens, by experts who use a specific methodology.
More analytically unfamiliar people make phone calls to unsuspecting citizens and falsely inform them that a relative or a relative of their relatives faces a serious health problem.
In fact, to present the necessary plausibility, they present themselves as doctors and urge citizens to make a video call through the Internet, removing their clothes to be "examined" by the so-called doctors in order to "cope" with the affliction of their relatives.
Then, after having previously recorded the audio-visual material, they proceed to blackmail their victims, demanding that they pay them sums of money in order not to publish on the internet.network the recording material.
The Electronic Crime Investigation Directorate asks citizens to be very careful to avoid their possible deception and protection of their personal data and recommends:
-
not to respond and not to be persuaded,
-
to verify the health status of their relatives before proceeding with any action,
-
be especially careful when making video calls with unknown people via the internet.
-
not to exchange digital personal data with strangers on the internet, as their security is at risk.
It is recalled that citizens can communicate with the Electronic Crime Prosecutor's Office anonymously or by name in order to provide information or complain of illegal and scandalous actions or activities carried out over the Internet to the following contact details:
