The Electronic Crime Investigation Directorate informs citizens about the appearance of malicious software in our country "Shylock»
Malicious software targets the misappropriation of money and financial information from online banking systems
It quickly spreads through emails and real-time communication programs
The Greek Police's Electronic Crime Prosecution Directorate is informing citizens about the "Shylock" malicious software in our country that aims to intercept money from Internet Banking Systems as well as financial information and data.
In particular, the malware has the ability to steal funds from Internet Banking Systems by using stolen access information (username, code access, etc.) to Internet Banking Systems (e-banking).
This software quickly spreads through emails and live messengers.
More specifically, Internet users are "infected" when they choose to have malicious links sent to them either by e-mail or through communication programs and then "persuaded" to download and execute the malicious software without their knowledge.
Subsequently, once the malware is installed without the user's knowledge, it first seeks to gain access to financial information and sums of money stored in accounts (whether personal or corporate) of the victim, while in the second phase to carry out a transfer of this information , as well as the stolen sums of money from the perpetrators, which controln the illegal action of the malicious software.
People who receive messages from unknown senders or unknown origin, either via email or via live messenger, are required not to open the links and not download the files contained in them.
In addition, type the addresses of the web pages (URL) in the browser (browser), instead of using hyperlinks (links), use genuine software programs and be updated regularly (updates), while there should always be an up-to-date PC protection program (antivirus).
To combat the crime carried out by the "Shylock" malware, an international joint operation is already underway, involving the Europol , the FBI , the European Cybercrime Center (EC3), while the operation is coordinated by the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) (Ref. the 10-07-2014 Europol Communication )
