Hackers have discovered a new way to break "secure" credit cards. Credit cards with chip-and-pin technology are considered to be the safest solution to magnetic cards right now. Researchers have proven that they are not as safe as we thought until today.
Banks have meanwhile changed their global cards and using this technology for safer results.
Hackers ήταν σε θέση να χρησιμοποιούν μια κάρτα chip-and-pin για να αποσύρουν χρήματα από ένα ΑΤΜ σε λιγότερο από 15 λεπτά. Μια ομάδα ερευνητών της Rapid7, παρουσίασε το hack στο Black Hat, ένα συνέδριο hacker in Las Vegas.
The hack requires a device skimming που διακόπτει το signal between the automated teller machine (or POS) facilitating a MITM attack (Man-in-the-middle) as soon as the card is inserted. The device allows hackers not only to recover the data from the card, but also to reproduce both the chip and the magnetic strip. Of course they also get the PIN as the victim types it. From there, the hackers download the stolen data and recreate the victim's card.
The cost of the attack? 2.000 dollars for the accessories they need.
Rapid7 hackers reported that they were able to pick up 50.000 dollars with a single takeover.
