Hide or show the Ribbon in Windows 8 Explorer

  1. Open Registry Editor (Click Win + R and write Regedit in the new window).
  2. Go to the following :
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Explorer

    If this key does not exist, simply create it.

  3. Create or modify the named 32-bit DWORD value ExplorerRibbonStartsMinimized . To start Explorer with the Ribbon ribbon always minimized, enter the given ExplorerRibbonStartsMinimized value equal to 3. To start Explorer with Ribbon always maximized, make it equal to 4. Delete the ExplorerRibbonStartsMinimized to reset the default behavior.
