IBM announced today that it will provide its Watson supercomputer platform to Africa to help them researchers to develop commercially viable solutions in key areas such as health care, education, water and sanitation, people's mobility and agriculture.
Computer systems Watson came to the fore when the supercomputer "won" the quiz Jeopardy in the US, demonstrating the capabilities of its artificial intelligence. The computer uses systems and software that improve the learning, and therefore, can provide solutions to complex queries by massively analyzing large amounts of data.
The analysis of Big Data of Africa could help the continent to gain a better understanding of issues such as food price standards, GDP estimates and the number of poverty to predict diseases.
Ο Kamal Bhattacharya, its director IBM Research in Africa, states: “With the ability to learn from emerging patterns, discover new correlations, Watson's cognitive capabilities have enormous potential in Africa, and will help achieve in the next two decades what developed markets have achieved today in chronological order space two centuries.”
