Intelligent Speed Limiter: Long before we see cars without drivers, we will see regular cars upgraded with smarter technologies that will eventually make possible their self-driving.
In the UK, Ford has announced the technology it calls Intelligent Speed Limiter for its new S-MAX, which enhances the capabilities of the cruise control of the vehicle with cameras capable of recognizing the speed limits.
The driver can set the maximum speed and ensure they are never ticketed for speeding, but when the system is activated uses a dash cam that will look for road signs with speed limits to automatically increase or decrease the vehicle's speed.
When the markings do not exist or are far from each other, the speed limit data can be obtained from satellite navigation systems if they are installed in the car.
