The cofounder and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey collaborates with artist Jay-Z (Shawn Carter) in Bitcoin Academy to be held at the Marcy Houses, a public housing complex in Brooklyn, New York where Jay-Z grew up.
Το program will take place twice a week from late June to September and program participants will be provided with smartphones, MiFi devices and a one-year data plan. There will even be a weekend program aimed at children.
Dorsey and Jay-Z are longtime partners and fanatical friends of Bitcoin. The duo invested 500 BTC last year to grow cryptocurrency popularity in India and Africa. The Bitcoin Academy is funded through personal grants from the two entrepreneurs.
However, the promise of cryptocurrency as a safe path to economic stability for low-income populations is far from guaranteed.
Given the instability of cryptocurrencies and scams, this project could negatively affect participants, even if it has good intentions. Encryption developer Austin Robey put it this way:
"If you were to ask the people of Marcy Houses how to better meet their needs, how many would say 'with bitcoin'?"
"The goal is simple, to give people the tools to build their independence and then the community around them," Jay-Z wrote in a tweet.
Participants will be given a small amount of Bitcoin. The nature of the program will depend on who registers - for example, it may host a Spanish course.
Some vulnerable populations - such as immigrants - may be interested in encryption as an alternative to international transactions that often require legal documents. But will they be able to safely cope with the fall of cryptocurrencies in a market crash?
