According research B2B International and Kaspersky Lab, the 32% of European businesses they provide online services (eg online shops and online media), was the victim of DDoS attacks (Distributed Denial of Service) within the last 12 months.
This proves that DDoS attacks are common and not individual incidents for them online businesses. For this reason, businesses are urged to take measures to protect themselves from these threats in order to ensure uninterrupted business continuity.
DDoS attacks aim to block access to electronic resources by overloading them with "unsolicited" requests. Today, DDoS attacks are easy and cheap and can be launched by anyone. The cost is low and with a simple search, anyone can find someone to "do the work" for them.
In addition, the use of electronic / virtual currencies can help to hide the identity of those who launch or order these attacks. The ease of doing these attacks means that any company with enemies or rivals is at risk.
However, research shows that IT companies suffer more than DDoS attacks. Worldwide, 49% of IT industry representatives reported having faced at least one DDoS attack over the past year. Other businesses based on online services such as 44%, 44% and 42% are also ranked high. Financial firms are also amongst the organizations most frequently attacked by DDoS (39%).
Οι συνέπειες των επιθέσεων DDoS εξαρτώνται από τον τύπο και τη διάρκειά τους, καθώς και από τον τομέα της δραστηριότητας και τα characteristics of businesss-target. Research has shown that 13% of attacks worldwide render target websites completely inaccessible.
Mass media sites often suffer the same fate, with 32% reporting that their online resources were completely disabled due to a DDoS attack. But even if attackers failed to completely block user access to an enterprise's resources, partial inaccessibility is also a serious problem. For example, 29% of respondents reported that they or their users had experienced them problems when conducting electronic transactions as a result of a DDoS attack.
This problem is particularly important for companies operating in the telecommunications and logistics sectors as reported by 49% and 45% respectively.
"To" fall "one website or block a transaction is just the tip of the iceberg. A DDoS attack can result in damage to a company's reputation or legal claims against it. To ensure unobstructed customer access to online services, businesses need to think about the appropriate protection against DDoS attacks in a timely manner"Said Eugene Vigovsky, Chief of Staff Kaspersky DDoS Protection from Kaspersky Lab.
Kaspersky Lab's advanced technologies for protection against DDoS attacks are integrated into the Kaspersky DDoS Protection solution. If a DDoS attack is detected by a special sensor, all traffic sent to the client is redirected to the special latest technology equipment by Kaspersky Lab, where "unsolicited" requests are filtered by sophisticated and personalized algorithms.
These "cleaning centers" are also monitored by experts, who can adjust the algorithms if required, even during duration an attack. This approach avoids overloading online customer service, even during a sophisticated or previously unknown attack.
