Kaspersky Lab has taken the lead in testing security software

Η Kaspersky Lab won first place in comparative which evaluated the overall performance of the new software Kaspersky Security for Virtualization | Light Agent, compared to Symantec Endpoint Security and Trend Micro Security Deep solutions that "ran" on a Hyper-V hypervisor. This is the first test in which the new one participates by Kaspersky Lab, which was introduced in May 2014.

The test, organized by the independent AV-TEST Institute, was to analyze the level of protection provided by security solutions as well as their impact on the performance of virtual infrastructures. All three solutions were similar, high detection rates for malware, but Kaspersky Security for Virtualization | Light Agent recorded significantly better performance in a number of areas. For example, it recorded a faster start of multiple virtual work surfaces, and its impact on system performance was 40% -65% lower when managing a large number of virtual machines.

AV-TEST's overall assessment consisted of four separate tests: a real-world test, one for detecting known malware, and two more specialized ones called “Login VSI” and “Boot Storm”. The real-world test and known-malware detection test were designed to assess protection capabilities by exposing virtual machines to 48 real-world threats and forcing all solutions to scan 9.851 malware samples. Those samples that were not detected at first were “run” on the tested machines to see if the security software allowed the malware to run in full.of In the last two tests, the effects of the solutions on the performance of the system were measured with its help Login Login VSI benchmark in 50 virtual machines that were running in a hypervisor while recording the time needed to start them.

The results of performance tests have highlighted the difference that occurs when software designed for physical terminals is used to protect virtual machines. In both tests, Kaspersky Security for Virtualization | Light Agent recorded impressively better results than competitors. Using the Login VSI Measurement Suite, AV-TEST found that Kaspersky Security for Virtualization | Light Agent records 40% less impact on system performance than Symantec and 65% compared to Trend Micro.

In the “Boot Storm” performance test, which compared the boot times of the virtual machine against a machine without , Symantec's solution caused an average of 3 times longer delay in the boot process of virtual machines. Accordingly, the latency was 4 times higher with Trend Micro's solution.

Combined, the results of the two performance tests have shown that Kaspersky Lab's specialized security solution for virtualization environments can be extended to larger virtual networks with greater efficiency. Maik Morgenstern, Managing Director and Technical Director of AV-TEST, said: "The impact of all three security solutions on the storage subsystem was the same for all three products when we had few virtual machines running on the hypervisor. Prices began to deviate when there were more than 10 virtual machines, while with more than 20 machines the difference increased dramatically. About start times, 25η a virtual machine of the system that used Trend Micro's solution took twice as much time as the corresponding virtual machine that used Kaspersky Lab's solution and four times more time than a machine with no security software.

In addition, the tests showed that each product provided an equally high level of protection, as is expected from corporate security solutions. During real-time testing, Kaspersky Lab and Symantec solutions identified 100% of malware samples, while Trend Micro did not detect one case. In terms of threat detection, Kaspersky Lab and Trend Micro solutions achieved the highest score, identifying more than 99,8% of the known malware samples, while Symantec recorded a slightly lower score in this segment with the percentage to reach 99,7%.

Nikita Shvetsov, Chief Technology Officer of Kaspersky Lab, said: "This test demonstrates that security solutions that are not designed specifically for virtual environments may have limited capabilities. For businesses, however, using thousands of virtual desktops or servers, the use of security software that is not adapted to these infrastructures can cause enormous performance reductions. We can assure executives of IT departments that Kaspersky Lab's security solution portfolio for virtualization environments offers the protection they need without creating problems for performance. "
