A user on the Arch Linux forum in early January wondered why he couldn't start the laptop of after running a simple command:
rm -rf -no-preserve-root /
Basically it's silly to run such a command, but it usually does not damage the hardware. The usual phenomenon is to destroy the Linux installation. However, as shown, on MSI laptops it is possible to completely delete the EFI boot partition through Linux.
The user who managed to dismantle his laptop says:
Today me and a friend ran the command on one notebook MSI because we wanted to get rid of an Arch installation. Of course we could have formatted the root partition and revolutionized Arch. But instead, we thought it would be fun to run the command. We had disconnected everything except root (/).
The directory that destroyed the system is located at
/ sys / firmware / efi / efivars /
When the particular folder is destroyed, the notebook will no longer work, as its firmware will be missing altogether. This means that the damage to the laptop is irreparable.
So far, the issue seems to affect only MSI laptops.
