The LMDE distribution (Linux Mint Debian Edition) 5 “Elsie” is available for download for those who prefer Debian-based Linux Mint.
As we mentioned in the beta phase, LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) 5 is based on the Debian GNU/Lio series of operating systems and specifically uses the packages contained in the 11.2 point release Debian GNU / Linux 11.2 which was released last year in December.
This means that Linux Mint Debian Edition 5 is powered by the long-term supported Linux 5.10 LTS kernel, which will be supported until October 2023. In addition, LMDE 5 “Elsie” comes with all the applications and packages included in Linux Mint 20.3 “Una”.
The default desktop environment of LMDE 5 is Cinnamon and the users they will have the latest version Cinnamon 5.2, which comes with many great improvements and some new features. Cinnamon 5.2.7 is included by default.
But other than being based on Debian GNU / Linux 11 "Bullseye" and using the Linux 5.10 LTS kernel (Linux Mint 20.3 runs on the Linux 5.4 LTS kernel), there is no difference between LMDE 5 "Elsie" and Linux Mint 20.3 “Una”.
LMDE is mainly developed by Linux Mint developers who are testing the compatibility of the software they are using with Debian GNU / Linux in preparation for the next major release of Linux Mint (eg Linux Mint 21).
Why choose LMDE over Linux Mint based on Ubuntu; You get access to newer packages compared to Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa).
