Το hack της online dating σελίδαs Mate1.com just proved that the Ashley Madison hack taught us nothing.
The hacker reports that the passwords have already been sold, and the requested price was 20 bitcoin (about 8.700 dollars). The actual selling price is unknown at this time.
"Their server was compromised and the MySQL database was dumped," the hacker told Motherboard.
"I had shell / command access to their server."
Shockingly, dating site Mate1.com was (apparently) storing its users' passwords in plain text without a trace encryptions.
To determine if a page stores passwords without encryption, try after creating an account to click on the "forgot my password" link. If your password is sent to you via email post officey then it is stored in plain text format.
So if someone / some of you have a Mate1.com account, it's time to change your password.
Needless to say, if you have an account on another website with the same password you should change it immediately. The phenomenon of using the same passwords in too many has been observed many times services. So a code from Mate1.com could also have been used for Gmail, Amazon, or a bank account.
We know that if it does not happen, one does not learn, but it is time to start learning from the mistakes of others.
