Megaupload paid users to upload files

In a New Zealand courtroom, lawyers representing the US seek the extradition of Kim Dotcom for his involvement in the operation of Megaupload file sharing. In addition to Dotcom, the lawsuit also names Mathias Ortmann, Finn Batato and Bram van der Kolk as co-defendants.

By presenting their data to the judge, US lawyers have revealed that between 2006 and 2011, the Megaupload paid more than 3 δολάρια (€2.670.000) ως ανταμοιβές στους χρήστες που φόρτωναν on the site which violated copyright laws.

US lawyers presented the case of a user whose name was anonymous, presenting him with the name TH, to which Megauplad paid over $ 50.000 (€ 44.500) in rewards, even when that user received more than 1.200 notifications infringement of copyright.

In an email which Ortmann sent to Dotcom, he said,

"To date, TH has provided us with 18 million pageviews [and] $ 112.257 in revenue from premium users who have downloaded at least 15 of its files."

This email was sent in 2007, and according to the lawyers it's pretty obvious that the people at Megaupload had no that TH was receiving warning letters for illegal files.

Megauplad had stopped his reward program in June of 2011, but at that time, the site was huge, and the company did not need a rewards program to keep users.

Immediately after the end of Megauplad's reward program, Dotcom accused his then competitors of running a similar program based on paying users to upload files that violate copyright. Probably trying to sabotage his competition by cutting off their collaboration with PayPal.

At the hearing of the issue, only the US side has shown evidence so far. Dotcom and the other co-defendants are expected to testify their own side of the story within the next three weeks.
