Two days ago, Skype's basic services were out of order around the world and Microsoft took about 12 hours to repair the malfunction.
During the interruption, users were unable to voice and visually connect with their friends through the service, as well as to see the connected users or to define the status of their profile.
In fact, all they could do was send blind messages to the blind.
In a statement today, Microsoft explained that the shutdown was caused by what it calls "a larger-than-usual configuration change" that disconnected all users from its servers.
Essentially and simply put the service was hit by a DDoS attack from millions users trying to log in after the first logout.
"When users attempted to reconnect, heavy traffic was generated and some of you could not use Sky's free services, including messaging, presence and contact list management. Others could not even connect to Sky, or make calls to landlines or cell phones. "Skyre for business was not affected"
the company explained.
Right now, all his services Skype or Whatsapp are functioning properly and Microsoft says everything has been fully restored around the world.
For history, 2003 was founded and 2011 was bought by Microsoft for $ 8.5 billion dollars (!).
The service is now available for most desktop and mobile devices, including Windows, Linux and Mac OS X, as well as Windows Phone, iOS, Android, and BlackBerry.
It is also available as a program browsing via web.skype.com, without the need to install it applications.
