Last week, the Microsoft αποκάλυψε ότι άρχισε να προωθεί το AI Microsoft Copilot σε περισσότερες συσκευές με Windows 10 and 11. The feature, which is still in preview right now, appears as an icon on the Windows taskbar.
The tool is enabled on devices running Windows 11 version 23H2 by default and disabled on devices running Windows 11 version 22H2.
Deskmodder has discovered that Microsoft is promoting one as well application Microsoft Copilot on Windows 11 devices. This new app does not yet provide Copilot functionality.
A quick check on a test system didn't reveal the app at first. It appeared however later and after updating Microsoft Edge to its latest version.
To check if the app is installed:
Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
Change the sort order to “Date installations” or type Copilot in the search field.
If you see Microsoft Copilot listed, it's installed.
You can use the option Uninstalls to remove it from the system. But a click on “advanced options” reveals some important details. The app version is 1.0.3.0 and is 0 bytes currently.
This suggests that this is a placeholder app that lacks some functionality.
Deskmodder also discovered that the application's AppxManifest.xml contained another interesting piece of information. The manifest defines the compatibility of the application among other things. The minimum version is Windows 10, and the maximum version is Windows 12.0.0.0.
Another sign that Microsoft is still working on Windows 12.
Microsoft did not announce the release of the Microsoft Copilot app and did not make any mention of it. This means we don't know anything about its functionality at the moment.
It appears to be related to Microsoft Edge, but that has not been confirmed either. Of course, this is not the first time that Microsoft promotes new applications on user devices without prior update.
For example in September 2023, Microsoft Install the Backup app on Windows 10 Enterprise devices, while the November of the same year, Microsoft installed the HP Smart app on user devices.
