Microsoft comes to the mobile health market with Microsoft Band

Microsoft is entering its market health with the direct disposal of a relatively low cost, collecting a lot of measurements from the physical function of the person wearing it, forwarding them to Microsoft Health Servers for analysis, and returning suggestions to improve their nutrition, health and well-being .

Microsoft Band is not only for Windows phone owners, but can also communicate with an Android, iPhone or iPad smartphone.

The Microsoft Band is currently only available in the US instead of 199 dollars. Apple announced early in September its own smartwatch, whose features are similar to those of the Microsoft Band, but will be released at the beginning of next year, 2015 and will cost 349 dollars. However, Apple has already devised its own plans for mobile health and has already ready its Healthkit.

"The Microsoft Band is not intended to be a fashion statement, nor is it intended to replace your watch," notes Quintin Morris, Senior Industrial to Microsoft, "but it can be used to track any activity you choose."

Μελλοντικά, η σχεδιάζει να συνδυάσει δεδομένα που αφορούν την άσκηση με πληροφορία από το και τα e-mail από το Office για να διακρίνει πως συνδέονται οι επιδόσεις στην γυμναστική με το εργασιακό , the relationship of a good breakfast with running speed, or if the number of meetings correlates with sleep quality.

Microsoft's standard all-time heart rate sensor is tasked with accurately measuring calories and sleep quality. However, it's noted that no matter how good a sensor is (the MS Band has ten), if it doesn't fit perfectly against the skin then it won't record anything, so its design was a particular challenge that led to an 18,5mm wristband in three different sizes, for the selection of which Microsoft even refers to a pdf file that will help to accurately measure the wrist of the potential user.

The Microsoft Band also brings so-called "smart" alerts, such as incoming calls, messages and updates from social networking sites. Microsoft Band will also support Microsoft Voice Communication technology in Windows 8.1, known as Cortana.

Interestingly, Microsoft will have 10 sensors on manufacturers who want to build their own smartband and send their measurements to Microsoft Health, a practice that shows the American giant's strategy in the emerging mobile health sector. Microsoft Health already receives data from the Jawbone UP wristband as well as the MapMyFitness, MyFitnessPal, and RunKeeper apps, and can transfer data from the wrist to
Microsoft HealthVault, a armored health platform of the company that has been linking patients to doctors for a decade.
