Mozilla announced today that it will end all support for the program browsing Firefox on Windows XP and Vista as of June 2018.
“As one of the few browsers that continues to support Windows XP and Windows Vista, Firefox users on these platforms can expect security updates by that date," Mozilla said in a statement that was published today.Earlier this year, Mozilla has already released Firefox 52 ESR (Extended Support Release) for Firefox users on XP and Vista computers.
The move of XP and Vista users to Firefox ESR was announced in December of 2016 when Mozilla also said it would give a final response to support for Firefox in XP and Vista in September of 2017.
As this date seems to have arrived (and passed) and after an internal review, Mozilla announced that it would stop any support for Firefox on the two Windows platforms since June of 2018.
Mozilla apparently took guidelines from Google, which stopped support for XP and Vista as of version 50 Chrome, released in April 2016, along with other older platforms of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, OS X 10.7 Lion, and OS X 10.8.
Firefox users who still need a browser for old machines running XP and Vista should use those old versions of Firefox and Chrome. But both Mozilla and Google advised users to upgrade to Windows 8.1 or a later version for security reasons.
Microsoft has discontinued XP and Vista support since April of 2014 and April of 2017, respectively.
Last year, Mozilla also announced the Firefox support fee for earlier versions of OS X, such as 10,6, 10,7 and 10,8.
