Mozilla announced today that it will discontinue any support for the Firefox browser in Windows XP and Vista since June of 2018.
“As one of the few browsers that continues to support Windows XP and Windows Vista, Firefox users on those platforms can expect updates security until that date," Mozilla said in a statement that was published today.Earlier this year, Mozilla already made Firefox 52 ESR (Extended Support Release).
The move of XP and Vista users to Firefox ESR was announced in December of 2016 when Mozilla also said it would give a final response to support for Firefox in XP and Vista in September of 2017.
As this date seems to have arrived (and passed) and after an internal review, Mozilla announced that it would stop any support for Firefox on the two Windows platforms since June of 2018.
Mozilla apparently took guidance from Google, which stopped support for XP and Vista from Chrome version 50, released in April 2016, along with other platforms older than OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, OS X 10.7 Lion and OS X 10.8.
Firefox users still need a browser for old XP and Vista machines and should use these old versions of Firefox and Chrome. However, both Mozilla and Google have recommended users to upgrade to Windows 8.1 or a newer version for security reasons.
Microsoft has discontinued XP and Vista support since April of 2014 and April of 2017, respectively.
Last year, Mozilla also announced the Firefox support fee for earlier versions of OS X, such as 10,6, 10,7 and 10,8.
