In his latest version Windows 10 Insider Preview build 18956, Microsoft started supporting MSIX applications. This format is fully supported by the operating system and works the same way Windows 10 handles *.exe files.
MSIX is a new form of packaging created by Microsoft.
It combines the capabilities of the installer format that usesfrom Store apps and the classic MSI file packaging format.
The new MSIX format supports all types of Windows applications, desktop applications (Win32), .NET applications and those released through the Store (UWP).
According to Microsoft, the MSIX package format
- It has all the functions of UWP.
- Supports application customization.
- It has more container security options.
- Supports all Windows applications.
MSIX can replace the work of the Desktop App Converter, which allows classic Win32 applications to be packaged for development via Microsoft Store.
Like the desktop application converter, applications packaged with MSIX will be able to have delta updates that are easy to install and remove.
When you uninstall such an application, all its components are removed without leaving any trash on your computer. But because everything has a cost, the packages of these applications will be larger.
The latest version of Windows 10 (build 18956) released for Insiders, supports MSIX packages. So the operating system now supports MSIX just like .msi or setup.exe.
