NBC News reports that Russia had launched what US officials called a "sophisticated cyber attack" on unclassified electronic systems. post officeof the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon.

Officials said the network was hit by a "sophisticated attack" on July 25 that affected about 4.000 accounts of civilians and civilians working at the Army General Staff.
The attack appears to have been carried out by an automated system capable of gathering vast amounts of data, which is then quickly distributed to thousands of cloud accounts.
Officials also believe that the hackers they coordinated the attack through encrypted social network accounts.
It is not clear whether the Russian government was directly involved. But sources within the network said: "It was clearly the work of a government agency."
