Open Source dominates the online community (with numbers)

2010, his vice president JOSA Mohammad Khamash presented an interesting post about how Open Source - thankfully - dominates the World Wide Web. Do you think that Open Source software still makes the rules for internet technologies? Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the birth of the World Wide Web, we present you a new and updated infographic for 2014

In the publication of Mohammad Khamash the 2010 on the use of Open Source on the Internet, there is an attempt to clarify why Open Source software is the backbone of the Web, since it gives life to the web server infrastructure and the operating systems used to operate most of the Web sites. After three years, Open Source is used even more and seems to be more loved by people who are involved in web development.

Ξεκινώντας με τα λειτουργικά συστήματα που τροφοδοτούν το διαδίκτυο, το GNU/Linux εξακολουθεί να κυριαρχεί στο μερίδιο της . Based on statistics provided by W3Techs, Linux runs on more than 38,9% of all web servers. The research used the same source used in 2010 for the data, with the difference that in 2010 it was based on the top 1 million sites, while today the data used has been expanded and their sample base covers 10 million sites.

Since many of the web servers hide their underlying operating system (mostly for security reasons), statistics show that 28% of web servers run an operating system that can be characterized as unknown/undiscoverable. Based on the previous (2010) statistics, which showed that Linux had a percentage of 60%, we can easily see that almost all of these machines are running Linux.

Three years have been enough to create a more substantial change in Web server software, where we have a new entrant, taking second place from Microsoft IIS. You may have probably guessed, it's another one websites code called Nginx, and currently has 19,9% of the market share.

This was not a serious loss for him , on the contrary, Apache's share improved and reached 61% (+1% since 2010). IIS now, Microsoft's web server is now left with 14,2 % (-5,8% since 2010) of market share.

In terms of web development, and in terms of server-side languages, such as Open Source, PHP programming language has reached a surprising 81,9% (2010 was the language of choice for 75% of web pages). Java, an open source programming language, runs almost at 3% of the web, while its proprietary ASP.NET has a rate that almost reaches 18%.

For most developers, writing code from scratch is not the most effective way to develop a new software, because they have to discover the wheel over and over again. They usually use ready-made libraries, frames, and in the case of web development, they often use a Content Management System (CMS).

So, during the 2010-2014 period, Open Source Content Management Systems have become even more popular. WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal hold 60,2%, 8,7%, and 5,4% of the total use of CMSs worldwide. The total reached the 74,3% of the market.
