What is OpenFace? Several companies are engaged in software and hardware development using face recognition technology. The software developed is capable of distinguishing faces and emotions in real time.
But to date, these projects are proprietary. Will the Open Source community ever be able to keep up with the already advanced technology?
Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University are developing an open source research-based recognition program FaceNet Google (PDF).
It is called OpenFace, and its developers report that they can recognize real-time faces using 10 as facepost as a reference.
Watch the video below to see the program in action:
The data sets that programmers use to train the program to recognize faces are about asignalda in relation to the data used by the respective closed source software.
The researchers report that results are very encouraging:
Data sets used are fewer than those used by industry face recognition applications, and the accuracy is extremely high and exceeds all other open source face recognition applications that we know and are based on the LFW reference standard.
Of course there are many space for development but the open source facial recognition program, OpenFace seems to be on the right track.
