Sony and Panasonic today announced the completion of Archival Disc, a new format of optical discs.
For the development of the format, the two ιαπωνικές εταιρείες είχαν ξεκινήσει να συνεργάζονται από τον περασμένο Ιούνιο, με στόχο οι καινούριοι οπτικοί discs to be able to store multiple times the amount of data than Blu-rays.
Thus, the first "generation" of Archival Discs will have a capacity of 300 GB and are expected to be released on the market in the summer of 2015. The plans of the two companies do not stop here, however, as in the future they intend to manufacture disks 500 GB, in a second phase, and finally with a capacity of 1 TB.
The companies claim that, due to its resistance to moisture and its fluctuations temperatures, optical discs are the ideal medium for preserving valuable digital data for several years. So, at least initially, Archival Discs are intended for organizations and businesses that need to store files for long periods of time, which they use relatively infrequently.
