The US Congress halted meetings last weekend without arranging for a replacement of the Patriot Act, which would end at midnight this Sunday.
From today 14000 websites (the number is constantly increasing) began to block access to Congress in protest.
The Patriot Act, and specifically section 215, allows unlimited power to the National Security Agency (NSA) to conduct mass surveillance and collection data phone calls.
The Blackout was organized by a team called Race for the Future or Fight for the Future. Group members (including sites like Reddit, Yelp, and Consumer Electronics Association)
"Congress: This is a blackout," the protest page says. "We are blocking yours access until you end mass surveillance laws.”
And it continues:
"The real answer is to stop all mass surveillance authorities. Until you do, thousands of websites will block your access, and more will be done every day. ”
The group is also running a Twitter campaign and inviting people using the tag “#ifeelnaked” to submit photos with little or no clothing.
The message they say is:
“Congress should be ashamed of the NSA's mass surveillance. It's like a movie quest porn, online.”
If you have a website and wish to participate (it's a topic that concerns us all) you can do so using the code below (before the tag closes):
