It is official: The Pirates Party of Iceland is now the third largest political party in the country. The votes were counted and Results seem to radically reshape the country's political landscape.
Although there is no final winner, the Pirates Party has been able to increase the number of seats in Althing from 3 to 9. This means 27.449 ballots, which are translated into 14,5 percent of total votes.

It is remarkable if one thinks that the Pirates Party was once a marginal political move. Ten years after 2006 was created by Swedish entrepreneur and activist Rick Falkvinge, pirates found a place in power.
The center-right Independence Party won the most votes - 29% of the total - which translates to 21 seats in Althing. The Left-Green Movement follows with 15,9 percent of the vote, which will give it ten seats.
With this victory, the Pirate Party will gain in forming a coalition with other parties, and will officially enter the government. It remains to be seen what the role of the Pirates will be in this government.
