Nasa astronauts will fly in style, with luxury fashion house Prada helping to design spacesuits for the mission to the moon in 2025. The Italian fashion house will design the suits together with another private company, Axiom Space, they say Jonathan Josephs & Antoinette Radfor from BBC News
In a Press release, Axiom said Prada will bring materials and manufacturing expertise to the project. An astronaut told the BBC that he believes Prada is up to the challenge because of its design experience. This experience has been built not only on the catwalks of Milan but also through Prada's participation in the America's Cup sailing competition.
"Prada has significant experience with various types of composite fabrics and is able to make some technical contributions to the outer layers of the new spacesuit," says Professor Jeffrey Hoffman, who has flown on five Nasa missions and completed four spacewalks. .
However, he said people shouldn't expect to see astronauts in "paisley spacesuits or other fancy designs like that. Maintaining a good thermal environment is really something very critical."
“A spacesuit is really like a miniature spaceship. It has to provide pressure, oxygen, and keep you at a reasonable temperature," added Jeffrey Hoffman.
