EU antitrust regulators are asking Microsoft users and competitors whether Bing must comply with tough new technology rules and whether Apple's iMessage service should too, according to a publication by Reuters:
The European Commission launched investigations in September to assess whether Bing, Edge and Microsoft's Microsoft Advertising division as well as Apple's iMessage should be subject to the Digital Marketing Act (DMA).
The investigations began when the two companies challenged the EU competition regulator designating these services as core platform services under the DMA (from Digital Markets Act).
The DMA requires Microsoft, Apple, Google, Amazon, Meta Platforms, ByteDance and Alphabet to allow third-party apps or app stores on their platforms and make it easy for users to switch from default apps to other than competing companies, among other liabilities.
The Commission released questionnaires earlier this month asking competitors and users to rate the importance of Microsoft's three services and Apple's iMessage against competing services.
Of course no one knows what will happen and of course no one can say what will be played under the table, as all the companies we mentioned above will not put the interest of the end user as a priority.
