A feature to share links on iOS versions of the Apple Safari browser allows iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch users to change their titles when sharing web pages.
One researcher has expressed concern that this feature could be misused to share "fake news" that has a wider impact.
When browsing web pages, such as news articles in the Safari web browser on iPhone or iPad, users can select and share a portion of text from the page rather than the entire page.
However, the text snippet may also come from a text input field that the user can control and edit.
In other words, users can type arbitrary text into the search bar of news sites and then "share" it via iMessage.
The link preview created by iMessage will display fake news as text from the actual page.
