Η '2016 Secure Internet Day' is celebrated worldwide on Tuesday 9 February, with the slogan "Take action for a better internet!"
Coordinated in Greece by the Hellenic Secure Internet Consultative Body, celebration and 2016 urges hundreds of organizations to participate to help promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people.
Globally, the Safer Internet Day (SID) διοργανώνεται με την υποστήριξη της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής κάθε Φεβρουαρίου με σκοπό την προώθηση της ασφαλέστερης και πιο υπεύθυνης χρήσης των online τεχνολογιών και των mobile devices, especially among the youth.
The landscape in online security has evolved over the last few years from an emphasis on creating a "safer" internet to create a "better" internet. Whether we are children and young people, parents and guardians, teachers or social care workers or politicians, we all have a role to play.
By defending a better internet, Day is meant to encourage people to play a positive role in exploiting the opportunities offered on the Internet while providing them with the skills, knowledge and support they need to deal with any of the online risks that they may meet.
There are ways we can all contribute:
- The children and young people they can help create a better internet by being kind and respectful to others online, protecting their (and others') online reputations, and seeking positive opportunities and experiences online. They can help tackle negative behavior by being 'helpful bystanders': supporting other people when dealing with issues online, taking a stand against cyberbullying, and reporting any inappropriate or illegal content που βρίσκουν.
- Parents and guardians they can help create a better internet by maintaining an open and honest dialogue with their children about their online lives. Supporting them in their personal development online and helping them deal with any problems or issues. Looking for positive opportunities to engage with their children online, and helping their children to find and use good quality digital material. They can help address negative behaviors by being involved in their child's online activity (depending on their age), and acting as a role model for positive online behavior, and also by reporting any inappropriate or illegal content they find.
- The teachers can help create a better internet by equipping children and young people with the digital skills they need for today's world, giving them opportunities to use - and create - positive online content. They can help deal with negative behaviors by supporting young people if they are having problems online, giving them the resilience, confidence and skills they need to browse the internet safely.
- Ο its branch Internet has a role to play by creating and promoting positive content and safe online services and with protection of users to respond to any issues, providing them with clear security advice, easy-to-use security tools, and quick access to support if things go wrong
- The responsible and responsible the politicians should provide the culture in which all of the above can work and thrive - for example, by ensuring that there are opportunities in the curriculum for children to learn, and teachers to teach about online safety, ensuring that parents and guardians have access to appropriate information and support sources, and that the Internet industry regulates its content and services. It must also play a leading role in governance and legislation, and ultimately ensure the safety and well-being of children and young people through effective strategies to protect them online.
